Evaluation Q.3
For my advanced portfolio task of the music video album
promotion package, I had to produce music video on develop a digipak and a
website in order to promote the album. After completing the foundation
portfolio task of a magazine, the already developed skills of photography and
use of adobe photoshop , now had to be polished further.
Throughout the research , planning and production of the
advanced portfolios , I learned many new skills and was able to work more on
what , I already knew from my AS task, the entire process altogether aided in
completing my music video album promotion project. So we started with the planning that contains the research work like what is a music video , its genres , about its website and digipak. So we also went through the audience research then we went through planning for the production , further we covered and researched about the theories and convention used at the selected before. afterwards we were able to write the concept and script for the video and then decided about the location , cast , crew and budget. then we held the shooting for the music video.
Before we could actually started off the production of our
music video , we researched about the general rule of video shooting and
editing and to make sure that we had our hands set for further the project, we
watched various videos using software like youtube.
For the editing of the music video the software we used was
adobe premiere pro cc , it was my first time but I called up a friend to help me who was professional at premiere. I learnt how to add videos in dashboard/timeline then to select the shots and to compile them for the editing process. after the editing of the all content , we went through the entire video and decided to give slow motions , reverse of a video , time laps and etc. Afterwards we went through the transitions of the video and then finally we edit some text at the video, before exporting our file we had a colour treatment. Firstly we went through the yellowish tone but it was so odd for it then we decided to go for redish tone plus contrast to the video.
The most interesting experience throughout the music video
production was the editing process , many skills were developed but the colours correcting stage was challenging.
This was just the music video production , coming towards
the creation of the digipak , the softwares used for this was adobe photoshop
we had already used for our foundation portfolio Pre elementary and final task.
Having a sense of working with the tools made the process quick but we also
managed to worked with the pen to select the faces of the artist and arrange
them the way we wanted for our front cover and that picture was added in the CD round cover to add the track.
A very interesting point to be noted about construction of
the digipak was decided to use elements that has significance with the album as
the name of album is sufi soul. We placed the picture of the artist with some
destroyed buildings with some smoky effects, as it was a sufi rock genre, This lead to
creating a direct sense of association and attachment to the video itself.
Our front cover was the picture of our artist Sana Yasir ,
we added the background of the picture into black n white, but the figure of the artist was placed as original We also added the text
at the front. And same as this was copied to the cds cover.
If we talk about the back side of cover ,we placed the
picture was artist , we edited it into proper black and white , then we added
the text and barcode and the logo of our record label company.
Moving on , for the website we used wix.com , which is an
easy to use interactive website creator, we were able to add hyper linked
buttons and tags to the site, along with anchor points since we had a one
continuous website for easy navigation. It allowed us to add a track player
with all songs , gallery for the pictures of the artist. it also allowed us to
put some news about the artist at news feed corner. A link to contact the artist and a corner to view videos. There we added some social links like of facebook , instagram and etc, it is a source of interaction for
the audience.
A number of skills were developed throughout the production
process which not only helped to finish the music video production but also
gave an incentive to be creative.
Evaluation Q.2
Q.2 How does your product engage with audiences and how
would it be distributed as a real media text?
For our music album promotion package the main task was to
decide the genre of music video. I chosed sufi rock genre, which seems to be an
increasingly popular amongst public these days.
A survey was conducted in order to reveal target audience and the
interests of viewers. From the survey, I found out that our target audience
would lie popularly in the 16-30 years , but this survey results did not mean
that our video would not be appropriate for the elderly. It was suitable for
the all ages and everyone would be able to derive some sort of interpretation
from it.
The main message of our music video is that , love never
ends but it remains till the last,” the soul die, love remains alive.”
The lyrics of the song we chose depicts helplessness and
yearning and hence our video is some, what along those lines , our music video
is a message to those people who are struggling with their loves everyday hardships, it shows that if there’s
a sense of strong belief and positivity
, and if one does bad with the health , the other lover should not give up.
Even though the video signifies a very simple phenonena, the
concept used to develop it is artistic and inspiration , we had shown some
beautiful places except a hospital. At those spots , they were developing their
memories , which are shown as a flashback in the video’. The video is full of
pain an it shows , if a lover is going through something , not to lose hope and
love never ends. The girl is hiding as she’s sick and suffering of cancer but
not telling that to the boy because she’s not willing to hurt him. And the guy
is suspicious to know why she’s doing this and when he came to know , he’s not
lose her and we should not to lose hope and love never ends , soul ends.
The message from our video is fairly simple and holds a
significant meaning for audience that not to lose hope and loving someone that
does not mean , you have to live with him/her but to love him/her even he/she
is not alive , love never dies.
Especially for traditional third world societies like
Pakistan , some people think love is not only till the lovers our together but
its doe’snt like that, we have some good examples of love here from our culture
of HEERA-RANJA , SONI-MAHIWAL , SASI-PANU. They all were separated and died but
there love is still alive.
It is important for a product to be relatable to the society
as it creates a strong connection between the artists and the general public.
For the distribution and marketing of our music video, it
will be done by our record label ‘ IME studios’. Since we have a digipak
produced we would market that to CD shops , even though the traditional culture
of purchasing CDs has been reduced to a large extent , we would still supply
them , and also provide an mp3 download link.
With our website ,
the official download link would be available for all songs of the album. An
advantage of hsving music video is being able to put it up on popular sites
like youtube, vimeo , ytpak and even share it on social media for it to be
easily assessable to all sorts of audience. Having a wide variety of ways to
distribute and market the product would give us an exact audience reaction
through the highly interactive social media.
IME STUDIOS itself is an
organization that promotes SANA YASIR to every extent and it is a huge
advantage to us.

Q1. How does your product use or challenge the conventions and how does it represent social groups and issues?
The Advanced level portfolio task for us was to create a music video either following or breaking the general conventions of the existing real media texts, allowing us to explore and eventually produce what would interest the mass audience.
I believe, our product uses most of the conventions of a typical music video but also, in a few parts of the performance the rules are also challenged to an extent that it gives us an edge. Our music video is on the song “Saayian” which means “lover”, the overall feel of the song is about a sad love story which ends with a death. ; the video is just narrative based. With a female artist based song but the video has no performance of the artist.
For the performance of the music video our major references included Boyce , Rihanna and kitty perry.
high budget, good lighting, different locations like haveli, shahi qila (the Lahore for) and a hospital, and artistic sets at the locations. This was our situation as well. Hence, we followed the example of our reference videos and decided to go with something that would be somewhat similar to their mise- en- scene especially since it would be easier for us to pull of as well. The final cut of our music video shows how our location has warm, soft lighting with maximum consumption of natural lights, it definitely gave an amateur locations- like feel to it. It also complimented with the narrative of the video and the lyrics of the song giving it a deeper understanding and emotion to it which happens to be the convention of music videos.
The narrative of our music video seemed to be very simple but had to be understood on a deeper level relating to the social reality. The conventions for the narrative were followed and referenced from a popular Pakistani music video, “saayian by qurat ul baloch”. Generally we see that most narrative based music videos essentially cover a very typical narrative but for our video we chose something to which the audience would have to connect with the entire society and link their interpretations to it. There are various concept based videos but those are difficult to understand by the audiences. We turned the concept of hopelessness into a narrative which gave us a chance to play around with the conventions of the music video.
Our music video represents an entire society in terms of the narrative. According to our music video survey we had more of the teenagers targeted since we also have a wide access to the elderly- however, we feel that it can be enjoyed and understood by everyone especially lovers. Since in the narrative there are two protagonist like a young girl and a young boy, we would have a greater audience attracted to it to find out what the music video is about. If we have a closer look at our society, in Pakistan we all are going through a stressful phase in the society with so much disruption and hence, the video allows audiences to relate to the reality through the music video; especially by the lovers who are unable to understand what is love and to to survive without love.
One very important relation of our music video was with the different dressings of the young girl, wearing traditional eastern wear cloths with beautiful hijab/scrafs. This shows that the girl is from a middle class family as shes living alone.
A major issue represented in our music video is “hopelessness” and “ girl suffering through cancer” , as there is nothing positive happening in the society as there is no real love around.. The social issues represented in the music video are easily relatable to the reality and society giving viewers a chance to have more emotional attachment to it.
In a society like that of Pakistan where there are so many issues, hopelessness in various situations is very common and hence, this is an extremely relatable topic for our society. With the use of the elements of the cancer , shrine , sad moments for losing love it made the narrative stronger as each element has its own representation and depth to it. For our entire music video to express a certain meaning, these elements added their own essence to it as all three
In conclusion to this, the social issues targeted are universal and the only way to counter these is to not lose hope and keep loving your lover after the death. Love is not to spend time with him ?her , but it is to love him even after he/she passes away to be for him till the death is love. we just showed the real face of love to the society and make them aware what is love. elements are extremely important for a lover while losing the love..
